Live at LFD

LFD members can optionally apply to be “bunkers” and live rent-free in fully-furnished rooms with access to a full kitchen, living room, gym, and laundry.

In exchange, these members agree to work a prearranged duty schedule and perform firehouse tasks like equipment upkeep.

This program is a popular choice for our members who are also students.

Bunking is available at Central Station and Station 5. Certain restrictions apply; contact us for more information.

 FAQs

Most line members (those that respond to emergency calls) respond to a couple calls per week. They also show up for our weekly truck checks and a couple of training sessions per month.

There are bare minimum requirements for number of calls, trainings, etc., but most people will have no trouble meeting these requirements.

  • New members will need to attend a 3-4 hour Initial Training Program. Line members (those that respond to emergency calls) will take nights-and-weekends courses provided by the County. We also have a few training nights per month at the station and an annual OSHA seminar.

Additional training courses are available based on your interests. You can see the various courses available from New York State here.

All training is paid for by the Department.
